Passing the Love Around
Foster parenting opened my mind and my heart to a whole new world. The time I spent caring for my foster babies was one of the most fulfilling stages in my life. I learned how to love better and to judge less. I learned that middle-class America was not the only America and that somehow we all must accept the challenge of defending the poor and the powerless. My eyes were opened to inequities I never would have noticed. I learned the limits of my love and forbearance and developed a greater humility as I recognized my lacks. In some ways, I am more kind although my kindness has yet to completely envelop the self-absorbed and those who cannot hear the cries of the poor and abandoned. In many ways, we are all poor and abandoned. I learned that too.
